Refractometer in excellent condition, complete, very clean. Rare precision tool signed "Carl Zeiss Jena No 54244 Germany". Original dovetail wood box also stamped "Carl Zeiss Jena" with a Hugues Owens distribution metal tag on top. No key, no handle. The original paper tag also survived and reads "Carl Zeiss Jena, Justier-plättchen zum Refraktometer" which means "Refractometer with alignement plate". Base is marked previously owned by the Chemistry Department of the famous Montreal McGill University in Montreal. It measures 12 inches tall. Unlike microscopes, refractometers are used to determine the refractive index of liquids and solids.
